Consumer Council helps reclaim 100’s of Thousands of pounds Bank charges are being claimed back in their thousands of pounds by hundreds of unhappy consumers with the help of the Jersey Consumer Council. Since we reported how we helped our first consumer in January to reclaim penalty charges from Barclays Bank worth over £4,000 we have been inundated with calls and e-mails. The good news is that most banks are behaving very professionally towards the customer and happy to broker a settlement but not all – Lloyds TSB are being very awkward and unhelpful and the advice to all Lloyds customers is keep persevering and if necessary take the claim to the Petty Debts Court. You can get your money back! And do not worry too much about the recent case that Lloyds Bank won in England. This was only a District decision and they would need to win a higher court ruling to set a legal precedent. If you have no idea of what we are talking about this is a summary for you! Last year a super complaint by the UK Citizens Advice Bureau was made to the UK Office of Fair Trading about the excessive amount banks charge their customers for penalty charges eg, bounced cheques, unpaid direct debits, going over an overdraft limit etc. The OFT responded by saying that they were excessive and for the consumer to reclaim these charges from their bank under the Consumer Protection Law 1999 -  which they did and have since been winning back money in the millions. Jersey is slightly different as we are not protected by the same consumer law but nevertheless we have been reclaiming the charges and winning. www.penaltycharges.co.uk is a very useful website which gives you all the template letters and advice that you need to get your money back if still have any further questions then please contact this office and ask for Suzette on Tel: 611161 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
